Relationship between strategy and organizational structure: a contemporary multiple case study

Resumo: | Thispapertakes a historical perspective in theStrategy discipline andpropose its application in a contemporarycompetitiveenvironment. Three models of organizational structure (hierarchical, lateral and network) are paralleled to the evolution of the strategy concept in its three main study avenues: environmental oriented view, resource-based view and relational strategies. The objective is to propose a comprehensive analysis about the possible relations between organizational strategy and its structure. A multiple case study was developed with three organizations, using non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Our results suggest that structures can be more or less flexible, and act as internal organizational frameworks and as facilitators of its strategy, being relevant also for contemporary firms. Resource-Based View, Relational View.O artigo traz um resgate histórico dos estudos de gestão estratégica e propõe sua aplicação no ambiente competitivo contemporâneo. A partir de modelos estruturais das organizações, este trabalho visa traçar um paralelo entre a evolução dos conceitos de estratégia organizacional em suas três principais linhas de estudo, notadamente a visão orientada pelo ambiente externo, a visão baseada em recursos e as estratégias relacionais; e a evolução das estruturas organizacionais, a partir do estudo das estruturas hierárquicas, horizontais e em rede. O objetivo do artigo consiste em compreender as possíveis relações das estratégias organizacionais com a forma das estruturas das empresas. Tem-se como metodologia o estudo de casos múltiplos aplicado em três empresas com estruturas organizacionais diferentes, por meio de observação não participante e de entrevista semiestruturada. Os resultados indicam que as estruturas podem ser mais ou menos flexíveis e agem como uma forma de organização interna da empresa e como facilitadores da execução das estratégias utilizadas pela organização, tendo relevância inclusive no contexto das organizações contemporâneas.
