Resumo: Despite the advancement of information and communication technologies (ICT), the printed educational materials (PEM) are still a feature in Distance Education (DE) and constitutes the most widely used study support to work the content of these courses. The modalities of language present in this material can contribute significantly to the mediation of knowledge now required. In a context where the hybrid texts are increasingly present, the aim of this study was to investigate the multimodality in MDI to identify how you are using this feature in the learning process of the distance education students. To this end, the authors were consulted as PRETI (2009) and Vidal (2014) concerning the MDI for distance education; DIONÍSIO (2007), MARCUSCH (2010) and ROJO (2012) on multimodal texts; and VIERA; SILVESTRE (2015), which gave support to the analysis of elements in multimodality based on the grammar of visual design of Kress; van Leeuwen (2006). The methodology consisted of desk research of MDI for a specialization course offered this type of education, analyzed in the light of multimodality elements expressed in the grammar of visual design. It was found that the presence of visual elements in this material has been reduced to instrumental character in most instances. However, when used as text composition elements, the engravings were related intrinsically with the content and contributed to their assimilation. Thus, it is concluded that the increased use of visual aids on the MDI can contribute to student learning of distance education.
