Resumo: Previous studies on technology acceptance models suggest that the success of online learning depends on the teachers’ attitudes towards technologies and online learning. Thus, the identification of an acceptance model is critical for understanding and predicting the teachers’ attitudes and behaviors towards digital technologies and online learning. A survey was designed in order to explore a model of acceptance based on previous research. Data were collected through a sample of 289 teachers of 11 private Higher Education Institutions (herein designated by HEIs). The results show that the factors most valued by teachers to adopt online teaching related to the concerns of reaching new audiences, of diversifying their HEI offer and of developing; five key factors were identified as critical for the teachers’ adoptance of online teaching. A larger sample is needed to allow for generalization of the results, in order to provide data for Portuguese private HEIs to design an adequate strategy for enlarging their offer.
