The foreign language teaching at a distance: the perception of students of Livemocha course

Resumo: Teaching and learning foreign languages on-line emerge as one more among many possibilities of distance education. It opens up opportunities for students who want to improve their foreign language abilities, providing professional, personal and cultural development. In this perspective, this article aims to identify the methodological strategies used in teaching of the foreign language distance via the internet, checking how these strategies have been perceived by the students, through a descriptive research from a case study in the course Livemocha. The research instrument was a questionnaire sent to Brazilian students studying English in this course. The results reveal that the Livemocha has a differentiated proposal of the learning of the foreign language, being a course that has a social way to learn and offers different methodological strategies in order to meet the different learning styles as well as different levels of knowledge of the language. It also has many technological features that favor the interaction among the actors involved in their courses.

Nessa perspectiva, este artigo teve como objetivo identificar as estratégias metodológicas utilizadas no ensino de LE a distância via internet, verificando como essas estratégias têm sido percebidas pelos alunos, por meio de uma pesquisa descritiva a partir de um estudo de caso no curso Livemocha. O instrumento de pesquisa foi o questionário enviado aos alunos brasileiros que estudavam inglês nesse curso. Os resultados revelam que o Livemocha possui uma proposta de aprendizagem de LE diferenciada, por ser um curso que tem uma maneira social de aprender, além de oferecer diferentes estratégias metodológicas, de modo a atender aos diferentes estilos de aprendizagem, bem como para diferentes níveis de conhecimento sobre a língua.
