Ageism in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic: How age prejudice became evident in Brazil

Resumo: This article analyzes the age prejudice in Brazil, from the panorama of the pandemic of the new coronavirus, which changed the country's routine circumstantially right after the 2020 carnival. Thus, an interpretation about how the perceptions constructed socially regarding the elderly, they are crossed by prejudice and arouse hatred, reinforcing distances of respect, solidarity and empathy. A survey of the public discourse of the President of the Republic and of Brazilian businessmen is also carried out, which minimized the alert of the pandemic and contrary to the requests for isolation and / or quarantine from the World Health Organization. The interpretation of data from recent economic research helps to support the importance of the elderly as an economic force, contradicting the idea of ​​their unproductiveness so present in current neoliberal thinking. Among the main conclusions of the work, it can be seen how the pandemic opened up the facets of a prejudice naturalized in the country and still little debated publicly.

También se realiza un relevamiento del discurso público del Presidente de la República y de los empresarios brasileños, que minimizó la alerta de la pandemia y contrario a las solicitudes de aislamiento y / o cuarentena de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). La interpretación de datos de investigaciones económicas recientes ayuda a sustentar la importancia de las personas mayores como fuerza económica, contradiciendo la idea de su improductividad tan presente en el pensamiento neoliberal actual. Entre las principales conclusiones del trabajo, se puede ver cómo la pandemia abrió las facetas de un prejuicio naturalizado en el país y aún poco debatido públicamente.Este artigo faz uma análise sobre o preconceito etário no Brasil, a partir do panorama da pandemia do novo coronavírus, que alterou circunstancialmente a rotina do país logo após o carnaval de 2020. Assim, introduz-se uma interpretação sobre como as percepções construídas socialmente a respeito do idoso são atravessadas por preconceito e suscitam o ódio, reforçando distanciamentos de respeito, solidariedade e empatia. É também feito um levantamento do discurso público do presidente da República e de empresários brasileiros, que minimizaram o alerta da pandemia e contrário aos pedidos de isolamento e/ou quarentena da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS). A interpretação de dados de recentes pesquisas econômicas ajuda a embasar a importância dos idosos como força econômica, contradizendo a ideia de improdutividade dos mesmos tão presente no pensamento neoliberal vigente.
