Cinema, education and africanities: conflicts in the representation of the black character in the film " Xica da Silva " (1976) by Cacá Diegues

We understand that cinema as an educational tool contributes to challenging the History and memory of African Peoples and Afro-descendants in the formation of the Brazilian people effectively instituted in Law 10.639/2003 as a compulsory subject in the Regular Education. Thus, from a film analysis, we aim to reflect the construction of Chica da Silva’s character in the film "Xica da Silva" (1976), by Carlos Diegues, considering the representation of the black body. Our starting point is the criticism directed at the film (published in the weekly newspaper "Opinião" in 1976, declared alternative and left-wing) by historian Maria Beatriz Nascimento, and the director's response, in an interview granted to Pola Vartuck, State of São Paulo, in 1978. It is concluded that the film points to a conflict that indicates a context of contrasts between the left perspective of the construction in the organized black movement and the production of the new national cinema and its alternatives. These disputes point out factors that translate the expression of the black female body in the referred film.
