Paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations in metaphor interpretation

Resumo: | In this article I try to demonstrate that the use of metaphors, without missing the creativity that characterizes that part of language, is ruled by certain linguistic patterns, which rule interpretation. A methodology for collecting and assessing data is presented, making clearer the fundaments of my proposition. Three verbs to express change of state used metaphorically are analyzed: to explode, to file, to freeze. As a conclusion, I argue that the cognitive strength of a metaphor lies in digging for the new (the cognitive load of a metaphor) in the old (predefined paradigms and syntagms). |

Se presenta una metodología de colecta y análisis de los datos que dejan más claros los fundamentos de la propuesta. Son analizados tres verbos de cambio de estado usados metafóricamente: explotar, archivar, congelar. Como conclusión, se argumenta que la fuerza cognitiva de la metáfora está en buscar en el viejo (paradigmas y sintagmas predefinidos) el nuevo (la carga cognitiva de una metáfora).Dans cet article, on essaye de démontrer que l’emploi métaphorique, sans perdre la créativité qui caractérise cette partie du langage, est conduit par certains modèles linguistiques, qui gouvernent l’interprétation. On présente une méthodologie de ramassage et une analyse des donnés qui rendent plus clairs les fondements de la proposition. On analyse trois verbes de changement d’état employés métaphoriquement : éclater, archiver, geler. Comme conclusion, on argumente que la force cognitive de la métaphore se trouve dans l’action de chercher dans l’ancien (paradigmes et syntagmes définis d’avance) le nouveau (la charge cognitive d’une métaphore).Neste artigo, tenta-se mostrar que o uso metafórico, sem perder a criatividade que caracteriza essa parte da linguagem, é regido por certos padrões lingüísticos que governam a interpretação. Apresenta-se uma metodologia de coleta e análise dos dados que tornam mais claros os fundamentos da proposta. São analisados três verbos de mudança de estado usados metaforicamente: explodir, arquivar, congelar.
