Resumo: | Initially, this article presents an overview of the development of organized travel throughout the 19th century, pointing out aspects that influenced its expansion in the western world. Next, it focuses on the main motives that led various individuals to choose Brazil and Bahia2 as a travel destination. Finally, it points out aspects related to accommodation and food in Bahia in the 18th century. This study is based on the travel diaries of seven travelers - Conde de Suzannet, Louis Agassiz, Maximiliano de Habsburgo, Maria Graham, Princesa Therese da Baviera, Robert Avé-Lallemant and Thomas Lindley - and information found in the following newspapers Alabama, Jornal da Tarde, O Commercio, O Século and O Interesse Público, all published in Bahia in the nineteenth century. The analysis shows the importance of these trips, which formed the origins of the international tourism that exists in the city today and the formation of consumer and service markets related to travel. A continuación, enfoca lãs principales motivaciones que llevaron a diversos individuos a elegir Brasil y Bahía como destino de viaje. Finalmente, señala aspectos de la infraestructura existente en la Bahía ochocientista, en lo que se refiere a los servicios de hospedaje y alimentación. La investigación se apoya en los diarios de viaje de siete extranjeros - Conde de Suzannet, Louis Agassiz, Maximiliano de Habsburgo, Maria Graham, Princesa Therese da Baviera, Robert Avé-Lallemant y Thomas Lindley – así como en informaciones encontradas en los periódicos Alabama, Jornal da Tarde, O Commercio, O Século y O Interesse Público, que circularon en la Bahía del siglo XIX. En ese sentido, el análisis certifica la importancia de esos traslados, matrices de los flujos de turismo internacional existentes hoy en la ciudad, para la formación de un mercado consumidor y prestador de servicios relacionado a los viajes. Palabras-clave: Viajes Ochocientistas, Motivaciones, Servicios.O presente trabalho apresenta, inicialmente, um panorama do desenvolvimento das viagens organizadas, no decurso do século XIX, apontando os aspectos que influenciaram na sua expansão no mundo ocidental. Em seguida, enfoca as principais motivações que levaram diversos indivíduos a escolher o Brasil e a Bahia1 como destino de viagem. Por fim, pontua aspectos da infra-estrutura existente na Bahia oitocentista, no que tange aos serviços de hospedagem e alimentação. A pesquisa apóia-se nos diários de viagem de sete estrangeiros - Conde de Suzannet, Louis Agassiz, Maximiliano de Habsburgo, Maria Graham, Princesa Therese da Baviera, Robert Avé-Lallemant e Thomas Lindley - bem como em informações encontradas nos jornais Alabama, Jornal da Tarde, O Commercio, O Século e O Interesse Público, que circularam na Bahia do século XIX. Nesse sentido, a análise certifica a importância desses deslocamentos, matrizes dos fluxos de turismo internacional existentes hoje na cidade, para a formação de um mercado consumidor e prestador de serviços relacionado às viagens.
