“The teacher’s newspaper”: the voice of teaching in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil (1955-1962)

Resumo: | This paper analyzes the characteristics and the main news published in the “Teacher’s Newspaper”, focusing on the dissemination of the activities of The Primary Teacher Center of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil (CPPP) between 1955 and 1962. We analyzed all the 84 pages of the copies of the newspaper that are stored in the Pernambuco State Public Archive, which is in the state’s capital, Recife. The period ranges from the first year of circulation of the newspaper until the last one available in the Public Archive. We carried out a historical and documentary research that falls within the fields of Cultural History and Historiography and the History of Education. The set of articles published in the Teacher’s Newspaper sheds light on the deficiencies of the education policies formulated in the state of Pernambuco, including the spatial wage gap across the state. Moreover, teachers who lived in rural areas suffered the depreciation of the profession, which led to the discredit of teaching and to the condition of abandonment by the authorities in terms of education at a time when education, especially primary education, was expanding in Brazil. |

Este análisis fue realizado a partir de los artículos publicados en las 84 páginas de los ejemplares del periódico, localizados en el Archivo Público Estadual de Pernambuco, en la capital del estado, Recife. La delimitación temporal abarca desde el primer año de circulación del periódico hasta el último disponible en este archivo. Se trata de una investigación histórica-documental que se inserta en la perspectiva de la Historia Cultural y de la Historia e Historiografía de la Educación. El conjunto de artículos del ‘Jornal do Professor’ pone en evidencia las fragilidades de las políticas educativas destinadas al magisterio pernambucano, entre ellas, una diferencia en los sueldos a lo largo del estado. Además, los profesores y profesoras que vivían en la zona rural sufrían una desvalorización de la profesión, lo que generó el descrédito del magisterio y una condición de abandono del pueblo en materia de educación por parte de las autoridades, justo en un momento de expansión de la educación y de la enseñanza elemental en Brasil.Este texto propõe analisar as características e as principais notícias veiculadas no Jornal do Professor, com enfoque na divulgação das ações do Centro de Professorado Primário de Pernambuco (CPPP), no período entre os anos de 1955 e 1962. O exame ocorreu nas matérias publicadas nas 84 páginas dos exemplares do periódico, localizado no Arquivo Público Estadual de Pernambuco, em Recife (PE). A delimitação temporal compreende o primeiro ano de circulação do Jornal do Professor até o último disponível neste arquivo. Trata-se de pesquisa histórico-documental, que se insere na perspectiva da História Cultural e da História e Historiografia da Educação. O conjunto de matérias do Jornal do Professor evidencia as fragilidades das políticas educacionais destinadas ao magistério pernambucano, entre elas, a diferença nos vencimentos conforme a delimitação espacial.
