Resumo: After many struggles the Young and Adult Education Program (PEJA) emerged as a way of giving individuals that had no or defective opportunities of gathering knowledge by studying due to the lack of available study and economical and social inequality in our society the opportunity of studying contributing for the creation of critical thinkers that can understand the world around them. The program also allows the elderly to enjoy the benefits of education enabling them to become aware of their rights creating autonomy making them feel like part of the social environment in our country. This article debates the historic context on which PEJA is in, bringing up the discussion about the contribution on elder students' literacy.

This article debates the historic context on which PEJA is in, bringing up the discussion about the contribution on elder students' literacy.Após muitas lutas, o Programa de Educação de Jovens e Adultos surgiu dando a oportunidade de ensino a cidadãos que foram prejudicados com a falta de estudos devido à desigualdade de nossa sociedade. Esse programa colaborou para formação de sujeitos críticos que pudessem entender o mundo ao seu redor. Permitiu que adultos da 3ª idade usufruíssem dos benefícios proporcionados pela educação, podendo, independentemente da idade ou classe social, se tornarem sujeitos de direitos criando autonomia e se sentindo parte do contexto social e político em nosso país.
