Resumo: This article is a conceptual study that aims to trace a historical course of the psychiatric knowledge about children, pointing how the conceptualization of autism will lead into this prospect. For such, we divided this work into three parts: the first is dedicated to the discussion of the concept of mental retardment, followed by the questioning of the first reflections on the psychoses of childhood and the birth of the Child Psychiatrist clinic and the conceptualization of autism by Psychiatry. Therefore, we seek to understand the meaning and origin of current practices, critically analyzing the psychiatric manuals and its impact on child psychopathology.

Para eso, este trabajo se divide en tres partes: la primera se discute acerca del concepto de retraso mental, seguido por el cuestionamiento de las primeras reflexiones sobre las psicosis de la infancia y el nacimiento de la Pedopsiquiatría clínica y la conceptualización del autismo por la Psiquiatría. Por lo tanto, se busca comprender el significado y el origen de las prácticas actuales, analizando críticamente los manuales psiquiátricos y su impacto en la psicopatología del niño.O presente artigo constitui-se em um estudo conceitual que tem por objetivo traçar um percurso histórico do saber psiquiátrico sobre a criança, assinalando o modo como a conceituação de autismo infantil origina-se dentro desse panorama. Para tal, dividimos este trabalho em três momentos: o primeiro, dedicado à discussão da noção de retardamento mental, seguido pela problematização das primeiras reflexões acerca das psicoses da infância e o nascimento da clínica pedopsiquiátrica e a conceituação de autismo pela Psiquiatria.
