The change of use and ways of land occupation around water courses has caused several environmental consequences, mainly due to the occupation of Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs). The importance of these areas covered with forest vegetation is the water supply with good distribution during all year. This study aims to assess the environmental situation of a fragment of the Basin Ribeirao do Lajeado and propose measures of water resources protection. For this, geoprocessing techniques were used to map the land use and coverage of 607.90 hectares, in addition to identifying the environmentally fragile areas. As the main results, there was a predominance of pasture, representing 61.40% of the total area, and the area of natural forest was the second largest area, covering 71.90 hectares. In the study of the Permanent Preservation Areas, it was revealed that only 37.14% of the area is under proper uses. Regarding the environmentally fragile areas, it was observed that most of the fragment of the basin of the Ribeirao do Lajeado is corrugated and wavy strong relief being recommended soil conservation practices due to risk of erosion problems. Thus, it is concluded that the recovery of permanent preservation areas improperly occupied should be through a plan that considers the environmental, social and economic area, according to the main function of basin Ribeirão do Lajeado that is water production
