Resumo: Brucellosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella that affects humans and several animal species. In cattle, the The disease is caused by Brucella abortus, a bacterium that particularly affects the reproductive system and is characterized by spontaneous abortion in the last third of pregnancy. Despite programs aimed at controlling and eradicating disease, due to its zoonotic nature, the disease remains endemic in many countries, especially the developing ones, causing losses significant economic effects on production systems and serious health effects animal and public. The disease can be transmitted by direct or indirect contact. with infected animals and fetal attachments, as well as by ingesting contaminated animals (mainly unheated milk and its derivatives). It can also be transmitted through the handling of carcasses and viscera during slaughter. Disease control and eradication programs mainly aims to interrupt the pathogen transmission chain, eliminating infected individuals and increasing the number of infected individuals resistant in the population, with vaccination being the main and effective strategy for control.
