Resumo: The xerostomia is a permanent sequel, consequence of radiotherapy treatment in the head and neck regions and affects the life of patients. The fall of the rate of salivary flow causes significant symptoms and worsening quality of life in patients irradiated, it is uncomfortable and a condition that afflicts the majority of patients receiving radiotherapy treatment. Since the first scientific papers related to xerostomia as undesirable effect of radiotherapy, to the latest publications little progress was achieved regarding the treatment of salivary hypofunction. As the literature demonstrates, many factors can change the individual salivary flow rate stimulated or not stimulated, however it is very difficult to determine the rate and the best method for evaluating the effectiveness of a particular type of treatment for xerostomia. Among the various palliative treatments exist, the combination of filtered water and glycerin that has shown effectiveness on the control of the discomfort caused by xerostomia. Although this treatment did not function in salivary flow, surface tension left by the glycerin, provides a relief for patients, and is within easy access and manipulation

A queda do índice de fluxo salivar causa sintomas significativos e piora da qualidade de vida nos pacientes irradiados, pois é uma condição desconfortável e que aflige a maioria dos pacientes que receberam tratamento radioterápico. Desde os primeiros trabalhos científicos relacionando a xerostomia como efeito indesejável da radioterapia, até as publicações mais recentes pouca evolução foi obtida quanto ao tratamento da hipofunção salivar. Como demonstra a literatura, inúmeros fatores podem alterar o índice de fluxo salivar individual estimulado ou não estimulado, entretanto é muito difícil se determinar o índice e o melhor método de avaliação da eficácia de um determinado tipo de tratamento para a xerostomia. Dentre os vários tratamentos paliativos existentes, a associação de água filtrada e glicerina que tem mostrado eficiência quanto ao controle do desconforto causado pela xerostomia.
