The tale and retelling stories is identified in the literature as an intervention channel for Alternative Communication (AC). Difficulties in communication presented as characteristics of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can impair their interaction with interlocutors. The objective was to implement an intervention program in children with ASD using the AC through story and retelling of stories. The survey was conducted in a philanthropic association of a city in the state of São Paulo that serves children and youth with ASD in period contrary to school. Data were collected through 32 meetings with the children mediated by students of occupational therapy course at a public university in the institution. Through data analysis, categories and subcategories of analysis were developed. It was found that after the intervention there was a stimulation in the oral expressions and not oral expressions of the participating children as well as the expansion of functional communication of children during activities. It is necessary to continue the program, introducing new subjects, different interlocutors and transferring the activity to other contexts, such as school and family.
