Kerbside collection of recyclable materials is available to all urban households in the municipality of Rio Claro - SP. This project assesses the financial viability of the kerbside collection considering its operational costs and the revenue prices of the materials collected. The analysis took place in six different areas of the municipality and under three different scenarios: current, minimum and potential. The current scenario shows the actual collection of kerbside collection. The minimum scenario corresponds to the collection of the minimum amount of waste needed to stablish financial balance. The potential scenario depicts the ideal collection of all recyclable waste generated in the studied areas. The results of the current scenario indicated that the kerbside collection scheme installed in Rio Claro does not result in financial sustainability due to low collection rates. The minimum scenario stablished that the collection rate must increase by almost 67% in order to result in financial equilibrium. On the other hand, the potential scenario showed that the kerbside collection scheme has great capacity of reaching financial balance and generating employment and income. The results of the scenarios showed that there is no shortage of recyclable waste being generated, but there is shortage of collection of this waste. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out reforms in the current kerbside collection scheme so that citizens' participation increases and therefore, the scheme reaches financial sustainability
