Adequacy of the SON-R 6-40 for People with Intellectual Disabilities

Resumo: Intelligence tests are essential tools for the diagnosis of intellectual disabili­ties. The present study aimed at evaluating the adequacy of the SON-R 6-40, a intelli­gence nonverbal test, for people with intellectual disability. The SON-R 6-40 consists of four subtests: Categories and Situations (reasoning subtests) and Mosaics and Patterns (performance subtests). The test was administered to 50 people with intellectual disa­bility. For this group, a average IQ score of 73 (SD = 2,08) was observed. Exploratory factor analysis indicated two factors, the first being composed of performance subtests, and the second of reasoning subtests. The average score of men on the performance factor was significantly higher than the average score of women (p < .01; Cohen’s d = 0,58). The obtained results give support to previous studies of the SON-R 6-40 and suggest the adequacy of this test for people with intellectual disability.

El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo evaluar la adecuación del test no-verbal de inteligencia SON-R 6-40 en personas con deficiencia intelectual. El SON-R 6-40 consiste en cuatro sub-testes: Categorías y Situaciones (sub-testes de ra­ciocinio) y Mosaicos y Padrones (sub-testes de ejecución). El test fue administrado a 50 personas con diagnóstico de deficiencia intelectual. En este grupo fue observado un puntaje promedio de IQ de 73. El análisis factorial exploratorio indicó dos factores, relacionados a los sub-testes de raciocinio y ejecución del SON-R 6-40. El promedio de los puntajes de los hombres para el factor de ejecución fue significativamente mayor que el promedio de los puntajes de las mujeres (p < 0,01; d de Cohen = 0,58). Los resultados obtenidos dan soporte a los estudios previos del SON-R 6-40 e indican la adecuación del test en personas con deficiencia intelectual.Os testes de inteligência são ferramentas valiosas no diagnóstico da deficiência intelectual. O presente estudo teve como objetivo a investigação das propriedades psicométricas do SON-R 6-40 aplicado em pessoas com deficiência intelectual. O SON-R 6-40 consiste de quatro subtestes: Analogias e Categorias (subtestes de raciocínio) e Mosaicos e Padrões (subtestes de execução). O teste foi administrado em 50 pessoas com o diagnóstico de deficiência intelectual, cuja média de QI foi de 70 (DP = 2,1). A análise fatorial exploratória indicou dois fatores: o primeiro constituído por subtestes de raciocínio e o segundo, por subtestes de execução. A média dos escores dos homens no fator de execução foi significativamente maior do que a média dos escorespara as mulheres (p < 0,01; d de Cohen = 0,58).
