In families, the birth of a child resizes the family’s dynamic, building beyond the roles of son and mother, the roles of parents and grandparents. Therefore, it is intended to describe the roles played by parents and grandparents expressed in the activities executed by two riverside families that live in the river Araraiana, in the state of Pará, who lived the moment of birth. The instruments of data collection were interviews semi structured and Field journals. In this community, the grandparents trend to adopt their first grandson as the last son. This trend predominates due to the extreme poverty in which they live, aggravated by the inexperience of the parents around the cares needed with the newborn. In family A, this trend was achieved and in the family B this adoption was obstructed by the father, by conflicts with the ideal models of paternity roles of the children’s grandparents.
