Stimulated by the experience as a Visual Arts teacher, the present research comes from the need to seek answers for some matters regarding teaching art. the intention was to analyze what theorists in art, education and art education think about contemporary art and teaching, and also how visual arts teachers deal with this manifestation as through fruition and as proposers. Are there contact points between theory and practice? The methodology was interviews with visual arts teachers who work in public and private teaching, and who are recognized as proposers in situations which involve contemporary art. Still as a selection criteria for those interviewed, the following aspects were considered: teachers who teach Basic Education II and took their students to the 29th Bienal de Arte in São Paulo in 2010. The path traced in the research begins in the investigation of some aspects of contemporary art, travels through the experimental territory of the encounter with art - fruition - and arrives at the place where art joins teaching. In this never ending path, specifics required by the teaching of art were evidenced and, mainly, the importance of a contemporary thinking in teaching art.
