The presence of the cinema in São Paulo, from the late nineteenth century to 1930, is mixed up – as it happens to Rio de Janeiro – with the city’s rise from a provincial corner to a large metropolis. The relationship between cinema and city is very well captured in this book by José Inacio de Melo Souza, an original route through the streets of the capital, from the “Triangle” to the suburbs, which takes as a map the architectural projects related to the construction of the movie theaters. In this context, the law passed in February 1916, which regulates the construction of these spaces, emerges as a turning point, foretelling the transformation of the city into the “crazy Pauliceia” that would be decanted years later by the Modernists.
