The newspaper O Exemplo (1892-1905) is a historical, cultural and political document of an era. On the basis of this statement, the central objective of this article is to demonstrate the speeches registered in the newspaper O Exemplo in favor of the moral and intellectual uprising of people of color, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The same is based on the field of Press History and the History of Education, and had the theoretical and methodological contribution of Cultural History. The uprising indicated that society owes a historic debt to people of color, in particular, with regard to education and calls on all people to undertake a crusade for the moral and intellectual uprising of the class.
