Resumo: | The paper discusses the hypothesis of the quest for legitimization of Brazilian country music as a representative genre of the Brazilian countryside, contrasting it with arguments for the stigmatization of this musical style. This examination takes into account its various strands, its integration into mass culture, its appeal to melodrama, and its departure from traditions considered significant for classification as rural music. To explore this topic, concepts such as “sertanejo universitário” and “MPB” are examined, alongside studies conducted by researchers like Alonso (2013 and 2015), Caldas (2004) and Candido (2010), as well as those connected to popular music, such as Wisnik (2004), Sandroni (2004) and Vianna (1995). |

Para isso, são explorados conceitos como o de sertanejo universitário e o de MPB e recorre-se a estudiosos do tema como Alonso (2013 e 2015), Caldas (2004) e Candido (2010), além de pesquisadores ligados à música popular, como Wisnik (2004), Sandroni (2004) e Vianna (1995).Universidade de São Paulo.
