Resumo: The article proposes a reflection on Os sertões, by Euclides da Cunha, based on three aspects: the narrator subject; the historical event; and the unique writing style. The article's author highlights the book's internal dynamics, which is now 100 years old, as revealing of the transformation process the man Euclides da Cunha was undergoing and of the view of the massacre, as his sensibility changes, as a proper man, as he contacts the drama of the hinterland people. The author's internal dialogue, his work and his history remain the major value of Os sertões, a reflection that is necessary for these days.
