Resumo: The present study sought to verify the influence of Paulo Freire on Chemistry Teaching through an analysis of the number of citations to the author and their characterization in dissertations and theses related to the area of Chemistry Teaching. The analyzed theses and dissertations were obtained from the Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações (BDTD), using the Boolean operators “Ensino OR Aprendizagem OR Aprender OR Educação AND Química”. In order to filter the desired studies, the titles and abstracts were read, selecting only those that dealt with Chemistry Teaching and discarding the others. In total, 1514 theses and dissertations were obtained, in which the citations to Paulo Freire were counted and characterized. Of the 1514 total verified works, 1007 citations to Paulo Freire were identified, distributed in 514 theses and dissertations, corresponding to 34% of the analyzed universe. A growth behavior of citations was noticed from the year 2000 onwards, proportionally surpassing the global growth of academic production in the digital database, indicating an increase in Freire’s influence in the area. It was possible to identify that 97.6% of the citations referred to Paulo Freire’s books. Of these, more than half of cited books was represented by Pedagogy of the Oppressed, with 24.6% and Pedagogy of Freedom, with 32.3%. In line with previous literature on the author and his main works, these two books act as theoretical frameworks for his main ideas, which were also observed in the analyzed theses and dissertations and in academic works in Chemistry Teaching. Among these conceptions, the criticism to bank education, the introduction to liberating education, the reflection on praxis and the valuation of popular knowledge and experiences can be highlighted. From the obtained data and the verification in previously existing literature, it was possible to identify that Paulo Freire has a great influence in the area of Chemistry Teaching and that it showed a growing trend, especially with two of his most publicized works: Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Pedagogy of Freedom, which are part of the bibliography of undergraduate and graduate courses.

OR Aprendizagem OR Aprender OR Educação AND Química”.
