Resumo: Paulo Freire, given the ethical, political and anthropological underpinnings of  his approach to critical-educational epistemology rooted in the core notion of the humanization of the oppressed, was a keen believer in the struggle for full rights and equality of opportunity for all. The premise that Freire's praxis is inseparable from the struggle for human dignity prompts us to revisit his liberating pedagogical model designed to enhance the lives of those on the margins of society as well as to highlight the pressing need for people to learn and exercise their human rights. The aim of this article is to broaden and deepen the debate on the importance of Paulo Freire's thinking on education as a human right, based on the theoretical and conceptual analysis of his 'universal ethics of the human being' and how it closely interacts with human rights. In his unremitting dedication to the struggle for human rights, Freire’s robust belief in the need for access to justice by the socially vulnerable is a prominent aspect of all his thinking. Freire expressed personal solidarity with those suffering unethical market exclusion, while firmly endorsing the use of the Law as an instrument for liberation. Freire's theory is, in short, a Human Rights Treaty, since it encapsulates problematicity, politics, ethics and love. The proposal in Freire’s work for a Pedagogy of Human Rights suggests that the Freirean discourse, rooted in the real world of the landless, the oppressed, and the threadbare, can be a highly effective tool for ensuring decent living conditions for those who, in the middle of the 21st Century, continue to be denied their freedoms.
