Resumo: OBJECTIVE: To correlate quality of life with health and demographic characteristics of medical students from a university in the interior of the northeast.METHODS: Descriptive, transversal, analytical, quantitative approach. The final sample consisted of 138 students from the medical school, using an intentional non-probabilistic sample, the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. For data collection, it was used a questionnaire to identify the social, demographic profile and student health and WHOQOL-Bref, which is validated in Brazil. The data were analyzed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.RESULTS: Most of the students were women (58.7%), aged between 18 and 24 years, 45.7% of the sample considered the conditions of the course excellent and never thought to give up. However, 89.1% of students reported that they sometimes need psychiatric treatment. As for the areas of quality of life, the social score had the highest score (69.92 points) and the strongest correlations were between the environmental and physical domain, as well as environmental and social, both directly proportional and statistically significant. Still, the psychological treatment showed a positive correlation with the domains of QL.CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicated there are correlations between health and demographic characteristics with the domains of quality of life, however the variables which correlate were: sex, satisfaction with the course, desire to give up the course, use of medications in due course and psychological treatment.
