Relationship of quality of life with mental health problems in medical students

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship of quality of life with mental health problems (stress, Burnout Syndrome and depression) in medical students of a College of the interior Northeast.METHODS: Transversal character study, analytical, quantitative approach, taking as a study in the city of Patos, Paraíba. The final sample consisted of 138 students from the FIP Medicine course, being adopted an intentional non-probabilistic sample, according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. For data collection, we used validated instruments to measure quality of life, Burnout Syndrome, stress and depression. The analyses of the data followed the criteria set out in each of the articles.RESULTS: Quality of life presented negative correlation with emotional exhaustion (p=-0.29, p<0.05), with disbelief (p=-0.31, p<0.05), depression (p=-0.29, p<0.05) and with the stress phases; while positively correlated with professional efficacy (p=0.19, p<0.05). As for the domains of Burnout Syndrome (emotional exhaustion and disbelief), there was a positive correlation with the phases of stress. Finally, the effects of depression on students' quality of life overlapped with other mental health problems, possibly due to multicollinearity (p=-2.70, p<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Medical students present various mental health problems that interfere with quality of life, compromising academic performance, skills development and patient care.
