Resumo: | Considering the central role attributed to the development of competences claimed by two documents that constitute teachers’ education in Brazil – the National Curricular Directives for the ‘Letras’ Courses (BRASIL, 2001) and the National Curricular Directives for Primary Teachers’ Education (BRASIL, 2002), this work presents a brief historical account on the term ‘competence’, its appropriation by different knowledge areas, its insertion in the educational métier, its terminological variety, definitions and use by several authors in the educational area. It also approaches briefly some issues related to the emphasis on the competences by current public policies and the so-called ‘logic’ or ‘pedagogy’ of competences. Bearing in mind the importance of the English language in the world and its use as an international language, this short essay contrasts the individualistic notion inherent to the conception of competence with the notion of professional genre or culture, activity genre or teaching culture, highlighting the need to discuss, from that perspective, aspects related to English teachers’ identity in the Brazilian context. |

COMPETENCES - COMPLEXITIES OF VIEWS IN ENGLISH TEACHER EDUCATIONCOMPETÊNCIAS – COMPLEXIDADE DE VISÕES NA FORMAÇÃO DO PROFESSOR DE INGLÊSCompetênciasProfessor de inglêsLíngua inglesaLíngua internacionalGênero profissional. Considering the central role attributed to the development of competences claimed by two documents that constitute teachers’ education in Brazil – the National Curricular Directives for the ‘Letras’ Courses (BRASIL, 2001) and the National Curricular Directives for Primary Teachers’ Education (BRASIL, 2002), this work presents a brief historical account on the term ‘competence’, its appropriation by different knowledge areas, its insertion in the educational métier, its terminological variety, definitions and use by several authors in the educational area.
