Resumo: The Italian author Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827) developed his literary activity in avery peculiar moment of Italian history: the instauration of Napoleon’s government in thepeninsula. Foscolo has not remained apathetic to the political matters which affected his time,and this article aims to analyze how the author’s ideas on the function of poetry are related to hisactivities as an intellectual, essayist and critic of society.
