Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to present results from my research on gender identities in adult literacy and in special schools. My discussion is situated in the tradition of studies in gender and language, focusing on discourses and literacies. The methodology is ethnographic-discursive, with an analysis of data that was collected in a teacher education course, in which participants carried out classroom research, and data generated in interviews with teachers (Magalhães, 2000a, 2006a, 2006b; Resende, 2008). The main result of this study indicates multiple, heterogeneous identities in gender discourses that are opposite, but which can mix in forms of co-existence. However, it is necessary to point out that gender identities are constructed in unequal relations of power in social practices. Key words: gender identities, discourses, literacies, adult literacy, special schools.
