Resumo: This article presents the first results of the project Search and tabulation of the didactic material and the oral history of Portuguese as a foreign language in Santa Catarina. It focuses objectively on teaching by means of attempting to answer the following questions: who is teaching Portuguese as a foreign language in Santa Catarina and in which schools are the teachers? Which conception of language do teachers have and share? The results point out to the fact that teaching Portuguese is characterized as an in service training and that the approaches, methods, techniques and procedures can be characterized as related to the most diverse conceptions of language, particularly to the one which takes the centrality of grammar in the teaching and learning of Portuguese as a foreign language.Key words: Portuguese as a foreign language, teaching, historiography.

Referimo-nos pontualmente à docência, objeto que tratamos pelas seguintes perguntas: quem são e onde estão os professores de Português como língua estrangeira no Estado de Santa Catarina; e qual é a concepção de língua que eles apresentam e/ou dividem? Os resultados não apenas apontam para a docência em questão como caracterizada por um processo de profissionalização em serviço, mas também indicam que as abordagens, os métodos, as técnicas e os procedimentos por eles usados podem ser caracterizados como comuns às mais diversas concepções.
