Contemporary Motherhood: motivations of childfree women

Resumo: This paper, which is part of a broader study about the desire to have children among contemporary women, has the objective of investigating the motivations of childfree women with respect to non-maternity. For this purpose, qualitative research was executed in which ten women were interviewed with ages between 33-40 years of age, with no children, married or in stable unions for at least two years, and who were active in the work market. The results were analyzed according to the content analysis method in its categorical type. In order to attain the objectives formulated for this paper four categories of analysis shall be discussed: waivers and sacrifices, parentified childhood, career, and maternal legacy. The results present a larger number of women who reject the maternal projects, for the choice of living a free life. We conclude that the motivation for maternity and non-maternity presents conscious and unconscious aspects and runs through the family history of each woman.

Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa, na qual foram entrevistadas dez mulheres com idades entre 33 e 40 anos, sem filhos, casadas ou em união estável há no mínimo dois anos, atuantes no mercado de trabalho. Os resultados foram analisados de acordo com o método de análise de conteúdo na sua vertente categorial. Para atingir os objetivos formulados neste trabalho, serão discutidas quatro categorias de análise: renuncias e sacrifícios, infância parentalizada, carreira, e legado materno. Os resultados apresentam um maior número de mulheres que rejeitam ou adiam o projeto materno, pela escolha de viver uma vida livre, sem as abdicações que a maternidade demanda.
