Resumo: | Jean-Baptiste Debret, besides playing the role of historical painter of the Portuguese court in Brazil and later of the Brazilian court, specifically during the 1st Reign, called the painter's attention to the religious manifestations in Rio de Janeiro, whether Catholic or African ancestral religions, which in some cases ended up becoming a religious syncretism. This anachronistic devotion, we will notice through some images portrayed by Debret, because to attract the slaves, the Church will recreate several devotions bringing with it a mixture of Catholicism and African ancestral religions. The slaves, through the mixture of their ancestral beliefs, seek to cure their illnesses with bloodletting and herbal protection. The Catholics, in turn, seek healing with the sacraments and promises to the saints of devotion. What causes Debret's surprise is not the fact that Brazil follows the Catholic faith, but the way in which the cult was performed, that is, the "religious superstition". It is interesting to discuss that the images portrayed by Debret bring the way he built the religious image of the Brazilian, and all the images have a similarity in themselves: the mixture of the liturgical customs that the Church recommends and the popular customs that each person performs, believing to be pleasing to God, causing two modalities: sacred and profane. Moreover, when talking about religiosity in Brazil in the XIX century, we cannot fail to mention the role that the brotherhoods played, both for the maintenance of their churches and to attract new believers. |
