Mimetic syntax in Odorico Mendes’ translations of Virgil

Resumo: “Mimetic syntax”, which we could define briefly as an ordering of words that iconizes their meaning, has recently been studied by Gonçalves (2021), who remarks upon the scarcity of works concerning this theme that takes as their corpus ancient Latin poetry. The present article, stimulated by that research, examines passages in which the Brazilian translator Manuel Odorico Mendes (1799-1864) seems to recreate in Portuguese the mimetic syntax of Virgil’s texts, which he translates in a poetic way. The article also points out passages in which mimetic syntax that is probably present in the original is not recreated (we can only speculate upon the reasons for this) by this translator, despite his close attention to the ordo uerborum. The way translators deal with this particular source of poetic effects offers us a criterion (among others) with which to critically evaluate translations that are presented as poetic recreations of the original texts.

Estimulado por tal pesquisa, este artigo examina passagens em que Manuel Odorico Mendes (1799-1864) parece recriar a sintaxe mimética do original virgiliano, que ele traduz de forma poética, mas aponta também vários passos em que uma possível sintaxe mimética do original não é recriada em português (e só podemos especular a razão de isso não ocorrer) por esse tradutor, de resto, muito atento à ordo uerborum.
