Identity and individualism in José Saramago and Denis Villeneuve

Resumo: In what concerns realism as an aspect of the novel, in The rise of the novel Ian Watt associates it with the presence of recognisable individualities as part of the readers world. Such connection demonstrates how appealing individual identity is in modern context, that in which novel was developed. In spite of that central role – or perhaps due to it – the obsessive quest for indisputable identity, that can be pointed out as a distinctive feature of modern societies, has favoured the rise of unsetling perspectives and situations involving the relation self/alterity. In this article I will investigate the way José Saramago and Denis Villeneuve deal with such important question in The double and Enemy.

In this article I will investigate the way José Saramago and Denis Villeneuve deal with such important question in The double and Enemy.Em A ascensão do romance, Ian Watt associa o tipo de realismo característico desse gênero à presença de individualidades reconhecíveis pelos leitores como partícipes de seu mundo. Tal vínculo é demonstrativo do apelo do indivíduo como traço distintivo do contexto moderno em que o romance se consolidou – a ponto de se poder dizer, como fez Marshall Berman, que na modernidade o indivíduo ousa individualizar-se. É fato que a ousadia deu bons frutos, perceptíveis na sempre crescente luta, em escala global, pelo respeito às especificidades de cada ser humano. Concomitantemente, a busca obsessiva por uma identidade absolutamente “pessoal e intransferível” (sirvo-me aqui da expressão do poeta Torquato Neto) que vem marcando a experiência dos indivíduos na modernidade é responsável pela criação de fantasmagorias envolvendo a relação eu/outro.
