Postgraduate studies in Tourism, Hospitality, and Leisure in Brazil: from the consolidation of master's degrees to the emergence of PhDs

Resumo: Tourism, Hospitality, and Leisure are close areas with interrelationships still little investigated on postgraduate studies in Brazil which can configure an area of study, the TH&L. Therefore, this qualitative research was developed through a bibliographic and documentary study with the aim of investigating the conditions and evolution of postgraduate programs in this area, alongside the origin of their PHDs under the influence of hospitality studies. The Brazilian model is made explicit, and within this context the first master's degree in Tourism emerged in 1993. This text describes the evolution of the postgraduate programs in TH&L with its consolidation in the 2010s. The initial PhD projects usually refer to Hospitality and cite authors and works in the field from the course bibliographies, with a great representation of the Anglo-Saxon and French currents. The most cited authors were Conrad Lashley, Isabel Baptista, Alison Morrison, Luiz Octávio Camargo, and Marielys Bueno. Some institutions shared more referential authors, noting two main sharing centers. In most PhD projects, it was found that hospitality led to some interest and knowledge without being its guiding thread, however.

La hospitalidad es un campo de estudio emergente, que permite nuevas perspectivas para la investigación en el campo del turismo y áreas cercanas. Este trabajo tiene como objectivo caracterizar la presencia de la Hospitalidad en las propuestas iniciales de doctorados en Turismo y áreas relacionadas en Brasil, mediante una investigación cualitativa de carácter descriptivo basada en documentos y experiencias con programas y análisis de contenido de los proyectos iniciales de doctorados en estas áreas. Entre 1993 y 2020, la oferta de los programas se expandió, pasando de un escenario de prevalencia de instituciones privadas a una mayor concentración en instituciones públicas. Los proyectos iniciales de los doctorados generalmente se refieren directa o indirectamente a la hospitalidad y citan autores y trabajos en las bibliografías de disciplinas, con gran representación de las corrientes anglosajona y francesa. Los autores más citados fueron Conrad Lashley, Isabel Baptista, Alison Morrison, Luiz Octávio Camargo y Marielys Bueno. Algunas instituciones compartieron autores más referenciales, señalando dos grandes núcleos de intercambio. El registro de la trayectoria de los cursos de posgrado de stricto sensu en Turismo y áreas afines desde 1990 y análisis de la Hospitalidad en el diseño de doctorados en estas áreas, esencial para los estudios y la mejora de los programas. O Turismo, a Hospitalidade e o Lazer são áreas próximas com inter-relações ainda pouco investigadas nos estudos sobre a pós-graduação no Brasil que podem configurar uma área de estudo, a TH&L.  Diante disso, desenvolveu-se esta pesquisa qualitativa mediante estudo bibliográfico e documental com o objetivo de investigar as condições e a evolução dos programas de pós-graduação nessa área, ao lado da origem dos seus doutorados sob a influência dos estudos da hospitalidade. Explicita-se o modelo brasileiro, em cujo contexto surgiu o primeiro mestrado em Turismo em 1993, e descreve-se a evolução da pós-graduação em TH&L com a sua consolidação na década de 2010. Os projetos iniciais dos doutorados, geralmente, remetem à Hospitalidade e citam autores e obras da área nas bibliografias de disciplinas, com grande representação das correntes anglo-saxã e francesa. Os autores mais citados foram Conrad Lashley, Isabel Baptista, Alison Morrison, Luiz Octávio Camargo e Marielys Bueno. Algumas instituições compartilharam mais autores referenciais, notando-se dois principais núcleos de compartilhamento. Na maioria dos projetos dos doutorados, constatou-se que a hospitalidade conduziu algum interesse e conhecimento sem, no entanto, ser o seu fio condutor.
