Towards a concept of innovation in tourism

Resumo: | Assuming that definitions constitute the essential starting point of the methodological basis for apprehending and evaluating phenomena, this theoretical-empirical article aims to discuss the evolution of the concept of innovation in the literature and associate it with the dynamics of tourism companies, represented by the conceptions of their managers. To achieve our purpose, we first develop a conceptual framework for innovation from a literature review. Then, we define tourism and the business activities that comprise it (based on the Tourism Satellite Account - CST). In order to compare this information, we conducted 35 semi-structured interviews (recorded) with directors of tourism companies in Cidade do Natal - Brazil. The prior and subsequent monitoring of the companies took place from 2019 to 2022. The content of the interviews was transcribed and processed with the support of the Iramuteq and SPSS 25 softwares. Word clouds and frequency tables were created. We found that the concept of innovation in tourism, not unlike other sectors, is linked to the idea of renewal, significant improvements, reconfigurations (physical, relational or virtual), personal and organizational interactions, acquired, shared or imitated knowledge, isolated perceptions and strategies or together, problem solving, adding value and satisfying consumer needs (potential or real). |

Para lograr nuestro propósito, primero desarrollamos un marco conceptual para la innovación a partir de una revisión de la literatura. Luego, definimos el turismo y las actividades empresariales que lo componen (en base a la Cuenta Satélite de Turismo - CST). Para comparar esta información, realizamos 35 entrevistas semiestructuradas (grabadas) con directores de empresas turísticas en Cidade do Natal - Brasil. El seguimiento previo y posterior de las empresas se realizó de 2019 a 2022. El contenido de las entrevistas fue transcrito y procesado con el apoyo del software Iramuteq y SPSS 25. Se crearon nubes de palabras y tablas de frecuencias. Encontramos que el concepto de innovación en turismo, no a diferencia de otros sectores, está vinculado a la idea de renovación, mejoras significativas, reconfiguraciones (físicas, relacionales o virtuales), interacciones personales y organizacionales, conocimientos adquiridos, compartidos o imitados, aislados. percepciones y estrategias o en conjunto, resolución de problemas, agregando valor y satisfaciendo las necesidades del consumidor (potencial o real).Partindo do pressuposto que definiçõ es constituem o ponto de partida essencial de base metodoló gica para apreender e avaliar fenômemos, este artigo teórico-empírico se propõe a discutir a evolução do conceito de inovação na literatura e associá-la às dinâmicas de empresas de turismo, representadas pelas concepções de seus gestores. Para alcançar o nosso propósito, primeiro elaboramos um quadro conceitual da inovação, a partir de uma revisão da literatura. Depois, definimos o turismo e as atividades empresariais, que o compõem (com base na Conta Satélite do Turismo - CST). Com vista a confrontar essas informações, realizamos 35 entrevistas semiestruturadas (gravadas) com diretores de empresas turísticas na Cidade do Natal - Brasil. O acompanhamento prévio e posterior das empresas ocorreu de 2019 a 2022. O conteúdo das entrevistas foi transcito e processado com o apoio dos softwares Iramuteq e SPSS 25. Nuvens de palavras e tabelas de frequências foram criadas.
