Resumo: This article presents the prospection, origin and evolution of a partnership between the Education Memory Center of the Faculty of Education of USP (CMEFEUSP) and the Coordination of Secondary and Technical Education (CETEC) of the Centro Paula Souza (CPS), aiming the production of research instruments for writing the history of professional education. This partnership emerged at a time when the CPS was discussing the need to structure the institution to avoid the loss of documental mass of school archives, considering the transfer of technical schools between state secretariats. A research project proposed by a team from CMEFEUSP and CPS, with support from FAPESP, implementing the first eight memory centers, between 1998 and 2001, has been consolidated and led to the expansion of memory centers
