#TurnTheCameraOn: Rio de Janeiro Pedagogy Students’ Reports on Video Conferencing Meetings

Resumo: This experience report discusses statements written in March 2022 by Pedagogy students from a public institution in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The statements provided a pathway for us to reflect on the possible reasons that lead to the low participation of undergraduate students in videoconferences and to their choice of turning cameras off. By actively listening to those students, we sought to understand the reasons behind the many black squares with names and no faces that populated our online video meetings during the pandemic. The responses given by the undergraduates showed that the act of not “turning cameras on” is, in fact, the tip of the iceberg of more complex social issues. Observing the reality of those students showed us the need to closely analyze socioeconomic issues in a country that continues to face serious problems such as digital exclusion, even when the pandemic taught us how the Internet has been central to everyday life. There are already digital interfaces that guarantee the construction of a shared learning, therefore, the current focus should be on supporting digital inclusion policies that allow more Brazilians to fully experience digital communication.   Keywords: Cyberculture. Pandemic. Video conference. Education.Este relato de experiência discute depoimentos escritos em março de 2022 por estudantes de Pedagogia de uma instituição pública do Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Os depoimentos forneceram pistas para refletirmos sobre os possíveis motivos que levam à baixa participação das graduandas nos encontros por videoconferência, além da própria opção pelas câmeras desligadas. Quando convidamos a/o outra/o a falar de si, estamos valorizando a escuta atenta e buscando entender os motivos por detrás dos tantos quadradinhos pretos com nomes, mas sem rostos, que povoaram nossos encontros online durante a pandemia. As respostas fornecidas pelas graduandas evidenciaram que o ato de não “abrir” a câmera é, na verdade, a ponta do iceberg para questões sociais mais complexas. Conhecer um pouco da realidade dessas graduandas mostrou-nos a necessidade de olhar com mais atenção para as questões socioeconômicas em um país que permanece enfrentando sérios problemas, como a exclusão digital, mesmo quando a pandemia nos ensinou o quanto a internet é cada vez mais central na vida cotidiana. Temos interfaces digitais que garantem a construção de uma educação da partilha, agora é continuar lutando por políticas de inclusão digital que permitam que cada vez mais brasileiras/os consigam experienciar plenamente os processos comunicacionais digitais em rede.   Palavras-chave: Cibercultura.
