Resumo: This text discusses issues regarding the school and city, based on the educating city concept, which was consolidated in the early 1990s, in Barcelona, Spain, where the first International Congress of Educating Cities was held. The article covers the following points: Can the city educate? What is educating for citizenship? When does the city educate? When can we talk about an educating city? The city does not educate without the will of the citizen; what is the role of the school in the educating city? Scientific and transformative school; what is the role in the educating city? The point is made that the city can be considered an educating city when, in addition to its traditional (economic, social, political and service providing) functions, it exercises a new function, whose aim is education for and based on citizenship. The text concludes that we need a city education and, to do this, we need to learn with the city. The city belongs to us and, because it belongs to us, we participate in its construction and its permanent reconstruction. The city is the cultural and educational space and this should be the object of city education.

O artigo discorre sobre os seguintes pontos: Pode a cidade educar? O que é educar para a cidadania? Quando a cidade educa? Quando é que podemos falar em cidade que educa? A cidade não educa sem a vontade do cidadão; Qual é o papel da escola da cidade que educa?; Escola cientifica e transformadora; Qual é o papel na cidade que educa?. Destaca que a cidade pode ser considerada educadora quando, além de suas funções tradicionais – econômica, social, política e de prestação de serviços, exerce uma nova função, cujo objetivo é a formação para e pela cidadania. O texto conclui que precisamos de uma pedagogia da cidade e, para tanto, precisamos aprender com a cidade. A cidade nos pertence e, porque nos pertence, participamos da sua construção e da sua reconstrução permanente.
