Free demand and hunger signals of the newborn: perception of wet-nurses and health professionals

Resumo: This paper aims to understand the concept of free demand and hunger signals of the newborn from the perspective of wet-nurses and of health professionals. A qualitative study with 21 wet-nurses and 20 health professionals working in a Child Friendly maternity hospital was performed. The data was collected through recorded interviews and it was used content analysis in the thematic mode. The following subjects were approached: searching the meaning of free demand and recognition of the newborn’s hunger signals. From them, It was evidenced that wet-nurses and some professionals do not know the real meaning of free demand and they indicate the cry as main signal of child hunger.

Foi realizado um estudo qualitativo com 21 nutrizes e 20 profissionais da saúde que atuam em um hospital materno infantil Amigo da Criança. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas gravadas e utilizou-se da análise de conteúdo na modalidade temática. Para atingir o objetivo, foram abordados dois temas: em busca do significado de livre demanda e reconhecimento dos sinais de fome do neonato.
