Prenatal attention requires the development of collective actions with emphasis on structuring of educative action both in prenatal time and delivery and puerperium, which may attend not only pregnant women, but also the newborn. Among these actions, the most relevant are the ones involving the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding. The goal of the current study was analyse based on a systematic review of the literature on the Brazilian reality, the influence of educational activities for pregnant women and nursing mothers at the time of exclusive breastfeeding. A listing of the released articles was done on BVS database, in the last twenty years using the terms “Health Promotion” AND “Breastfeeding”. The period included, however, were the last ten years (2001 to 2011) due to the large number of studies found. It was found 313 studies on LILACS database, 1.392 on MEDLINE database and 22 on IBECS database. The COCHRANE database was not included in the study for failing to meet your search criteria. The studies found were submitted to the tests of relevance, applied by two independent researchers, considering the inclusion criteria pre-established and the assessment of methodological rigor, using the “Critical Appraisal Skills Programme” (CASP) tool. After careful review of studies, 11 were selected. Ten of the selected studies have found links between the actions of health education developed during the prenatal, puerperium and follow-up of baby, with a prolongation of exclusive breastfeeding. In relation to educational actions found in the studies received featured those involving support and guidance, especially those carried out by Family Health Program and units that are part of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. It is therefore considered that the educational activities influence on the extension of exclusive breast-feeding time and can bring significant improvements on the low rates of exclusive breastfeeding found in Brazil.
