National production on epistemology in information science: bibliographic survey at Brapci (2013-2023)

In the last decade, epistemological studies have contributed to the development of research in the area of Information Science, reflecting the importance of this domain in this area of knowledge, mainly in light of new professional demands. In view of this, this study is based on the following question: What are the contributions of studies published in Brazil regarding the epistemology of Information Science, in the period from 2013 to 2023? This study aims to survey the state of the art of studies on epistemology in the Brazilian context, in order to verify what and how the topic is being approached in the area of Information Science. This is an exploratory and descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, which used the bibliographic research method combined with action research. To select scientific articles and analyze the characteristics of publications, ProKnow-C was used as an intervention instrument. The present study resulted in a bibliographic portfolio of scientific articles retrieved from the Information Science Database, the majority of which discuss Information Science paradigms, the constitution of its scientific field and underlying epistemological issues, including the interdisciplinarity of the area and the construction of knowledge in Information Science from a historical point of view. Despite the importance that scientific thinking plays in Information Science, as a fundamental role in the constitution of the field of knowledge, it considers the need for studies that focus on informational processes, including professional practice, in order to verify the need for this field of activity.
