Semiotics in library science courses in Brazil: a survey of contents and theoretical currents from the curriculum

Among the essential foundations for the training of information professionals are the contents related to theories of language, present mainly in disciplines related to the Organization of Information and Knowledge. Semiotics, as a science that studies the processes of signification and languages, is linked to the teaching of librarianship. Thus, the objective of this research is to analyze the contents and theoretical currents of semiotics in undergraduate courses in librarianship in Brazil. For this, this research, of qualitative approach and theoretical nature, uses the method of documentary research from a survey of library science courses in Brazil on the e-mec platform. As a result, it presents an analysis of the teaching plans, menus and bibliographies of the courses analyzed, identifying the main theorists and approaches present in the teaching of librarianship. It can be concluded that the bibliographies of the courses focus more on works that introduce general semiotics and its various theories, an approach more appropriate for a first contact with the theory. Thus, the contact with the classics of semiotics is restricted to the thought of the available commentators.
