Critical and liberating education: possible paths from the contributions of bell hooks

Resumo: This research resulted from the interest in better understanding the contributions of bell hooks to the field of Education. Within the scope of the qualitative approach, it was decided to carry out a bibliographical research. In addition to hooks’ productions, the research’s theoretical framework was enhanced with the writings of educator Paulo Freire, an important reference for the author’s work. The investigation made it possible to identify elements of the concept of critical and liberating education defended by hooks, such as: dialogue; commitment to the development of democratic relations, autonomy, comprehensive education and the transformation of a dehumanizing reality. The research results point to the potential of bell hooks’ educational perspective to contribute to the construction of humanizing pedagogical practices. However, the realization of this counter-hegemonic praxis involves contradictions and demands, many times, to face positions of refusal, on the part of those who do not want the transformation of the status quo

No âmbito da abordagem qualitativa, optou-se por realizar uma pesquisa bibliográfica. Além das produções de hooks, o quadro teórico da pesquisa foi incrementado com escritos do educador Paulo Freire, importante referência para o trabalho da autora. A investigação permitiu identificar elementos da concepção de educação crítica e libertadora defendida por hooks, tais como: o diálogo; compromisso com o desenvolvimento de relações democráticas, com a autonomia, com a formação integral e com a transformação da realidade desumanizadora. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam para a potencialidade da perspectiva educativa de bell hooks de contribuir com a construção de práticas pedagógicas humanizadoras.
