Yalorixás and education: discussing religious education in schools

Resumo: Yalorixás are mães de santo, priestresses of the Candomblé religion. Although they receive social recognition and have the power to mobilize people, they also suffer from racism or intolerance inside or outside their own communities. This article aims to discuss the relationship between school education and religiosity from the point of view of five Yalorixás, in the Baixada Fluminense area. Through interviews and observations, carried out between May 2014 and January 2015 in four different terreiros (sacred sites) of the region, we identified how these religious leaders perceive intolerance and racism and how they critically approach religious education in the public school system of Rio de Janeiro State.

En este artículo intentamos discutir la relación entre educación escolar y religiosidad a partir de la visión de cinco Yialorixás del Candomblé de la región de Baixada Fluminense. Por medio de entrevistas y observaciones realizadas entre mayo de 2014 y enero de 2015, en cuatro diferentes terreiros de la mencionada región, identificamos cómo dichas líderes religiosas perciben la intolerancia, el racismo y discuten críticamente la enseñanza religiosa en la red pública de Rio de Janeiro.   Les Yalorixás sont des mères-de-saint du Candomblé ; elles sont reconnues socialement et ont une force de mobilisation, en même temps, elles vivent des situations de racisme et d’intolérance à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur de leurs communautés. Dans cet article, nous cherchons à discuter le rapport entre l’éducation scolaire et les religiosités à travers la vision de cinq Yalorixás du Candomblé de la Baixada Fluminense. À partir d’entretiens et d’observations réalisés entre mai 2014 et janvier 2015, dans quatre différents terreiros situés dans cette région, nous avons examiné de quelle manière ces leaders religieux perçoivent l’intolérance et le racisme, et discutent d’une perspective critique l’enseignement religieux dans le réseau publique à Rio de Janeiro.   Yalorixás são mães de santo do Candomblé; possuem reconhecimento social e força de mobilização e, ao mesmo tempo, convivem com situações de racismo e intolerância dentro ou fora de suas comunidades. Neste artigo, procuramos discutir a relação entre educação escolar e religiosidade a partir da visão de cinco Yalorixás do Candomblé da Baixada Fluminense.
