Factors associated with school dropout in higher education: A longitudinal study

Resumo: This article investigates the factors associated with higher education dropout based on the experience of the Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul (UFFS). This quantitative study was carried out using data from a cohort of 1,391 students who entered university in 2013. The statistical investigation is conducted based on survival analysis. The main results indicate that course dropout occurs more frequently in the first year; higher grades before and during the course, social support, and entering the first course choice reduce the chances of dropout; and men and blacks drop out more frequently. More broadly, the evidence suggests that, even at a less selective federal university like UFFS, students’ socioeconomic level is not a strong predictor of course dropout.

La investigación estadística es conducida a partir del análisis de supervivencia. Los principales resultados señalan que: la deserción del curso se presenta de manera más marcada en el primer año; calificaciones más altas antes y durante el curso, apoyo social y el ingreso en la primera opción de curso reducen las posibilidades de deserción; y los hombres y los negros abandonan más frecuentemente. De modo más amplio, las evidencias sugieren que, incluso en una universidad federal menos selectiva como la UFFS, el nivel socioeconómico de los alumnos no es un fuerte predictor de abandono de estudios.Cet article étudie les facteurs associés à l’abandon des études supérieures à partir de l’expérience de l’Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul (UFFS). Il s’agit d’une étude quantitative dont les données concernent une cohorte de 1.391 étudiants entrés à l’université en 2013. L’étude statistique est basée sur une analyse de la survie. Les principaux résultats indiquent que: l’abandon des cours est plus prononcé durant la première année universitaire; de meilleures notes obtenues avant et à l’université, le soutien social et l’inscription dans un cursus universitaire correspondant au premier choix de l’étudiant réduisent les risques de décrochage; les hommes et les noirs abandonnent plus fréquemment leurs études. Plus généralement, les données suggèrent que, même dans une université fédérale moins sélective telle l’UFFS, le niveau socio-économique des étudiants n’est pas un facteur prédictif important du décrochage.Este artigo investiga os fatores associados à evasão de curso superior a partir da experiência da Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul (UFFS). O estudo é de cunho quantitativo, realizado por meio dos dados de uma coorte de 1.391 estudantes ingressantes em 2013. A investigação estatística é conduzida a partir de análise de sobrevivência. Os principais resultados apontam que: a evasão de curso ocorre de forma mais acentuada no primeiro ano; notas mais altas antes e durante o curso, apoio social e o ingresso na primeira opção de curso reduzem as chances de evasão; e homens e negros evadem mais frequentemente.
