Mixed methods in education research: towards a reflexive use

Resumo: This article aims to investigate the reflexive use of mixed methods, i.e., those that combine quantitative and qualitative approaches in the same research in order to conduct the empirical stage of the study. After describing the general characteristics and main criticisms, we present the least number of elements that we believe should be made explicit in the use of mixed methods to ensure rigor in research and epistemological coherence. Later, we present an illustration of the operationalization and application of mixed methodologies in educational research that addresses professional difficulties that arise in the daily work of specialized agriculture teachers.

Later, we present an illustration of the operationalization and application of mixed methodologies in educational research that addresses professional difficulties that arise in the daily work of specialized agriculture teachers.  Este artículo pretende contribuir al uso reflexivo de los métodos mixtos, es decir aquellos métodos que combinan en una misma investigación las miradas cuantitativas y cualitativas en vistas de la realización de la fase empírica del estudio. Luego de describir sus características generales y sus principales críticas, se presentan los elementos mínimos que consideramos deberían ser explicitados cuando se emplean los métodos mixtos, con la finalidad de asegurar una vigilancia investigativa y una coherencia epistemológica. Posteriormente, se presenta una ilustración de la operacionalización y aplicación de los métodos mixtos en el caso de una investigación en educación que aborda las dificultades profesionales emergentes en el trabajo cotidiano de los profesores de especialidades agropecuarias.Le but de cet article est de contribuer à l’utilisation réflexive des méthodes mixtes, qui associent, dans une même recherche, des approches quantitatifes et qualitatifes dans la phase empirique de l’étude. Après la description des caractéristiques générales et des principales critiques de ces méthodes, nous présenterons les éléments minimums qui devraient, selon nous, être explicités dans l’utilisation des méthodes mixtes, afin d’ assurer la rigueur scientifique de la recherche et la cohérence épistémologique. Ce travail présentera ensuite une illustration de l’opérationnalisation et de l’application des méthodes mixtes, le cas d’une recherche en éducation abordant les difficultés professionnelles qui surgissent dans le travail quotidien des professeurs de l’enseignement agricole.  Este artigo pretende contribuir com o uso reflexivo de métodos mistos, ou seja, aqueles que combinam na mesma pesquisa olhares quantitativos e qualitativos, visando à realização da fase empírica do estudo. Após a descrição das suas características gerais e principais críticas, são apresentados os elementos mínimos que consideramos que deveriam ser explicitados no uso dos métodos mistos, com a finalidade de garantir rigor na pesquisa e coerência epistemológica.
