Non-conventional and medicinal food plants: knowledge and applications in fairs in Belém, Pará, Brazil

Resumo: Non-conventional food plants (PANC) are little known species, but have rich nutritional value and therapeutic properties. In view of this, this study aimed to carry out a survey of PANCs marketed in fairs in Belém, their origin and uses. Data collection was carried out at 30 sales points, covering 10 fairs / public markets, for qualitative and quantitative analysis. 34 species were found, from 24 botanical families; and the selling point with the greatest diversity of species was the Feira do Ver-o-Peso, being the main supplier for the other fairs and markets in Belém. The PANC parts most used as food were leaves and fruits; and as medicinal use, species used to treat digestive problems predominated. The researched plants express relevant plant diversity, and can be used in healthy food preparations, contributing to a healthy diet and rescue of the regional food culture.

Diante disso, este estudo objetivou realizar levantamento das PANC comercializadas em feiras-livres de Belém, sua procedência e usos. A coleta dos dados foi realizada em 30 locais de venda, abrangendo 10 feiras/mercados públicos, para análise qualitativa e quantitativa. Foram encontradas 34 espécies, de 24 famílias botânicas; e o local de venda com maior diversidade de espécies foi a Feira do Ver-o-Peso, sendo o principal fornecedor para as demais feiras e mercados de Belém. As partes das PANC mais utilizadas como alimentos foram folhas e frutos; e como uso medicinal, predominaram espécies utilizadas para tratamento de problemas do aparelho digestivo.
