Over-exploitation and early deterioration of the workforce: the health of clothing workers

Resumo: The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the overexploitation of the workforce and the concept of wear and tear on workers in enterprises installed in two municipalities of the Confection Center of the interior of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The study, based on a qualitative approach, was developed in 2017 and 2018 in the municipalities of Toritama and Santa Cruz do Capibaribe. Fourteen semi-structured interviews were carried out, following a pre-established script organized in three priority axes: worker profile; social and work aspects; and aspects related to health. In analyzing the data, the totality and history of social relations and their interaction with particular social processes (dialectical method) were considered. The essential guiding categories for understanding the structure and dynamics of the workers’ health-disease process were: overexploitation of the workforce, working hours, work process and production. The concepts of precariousness, intensification, workloads, wear of the workforce were also important theoretical factors of the analysis. The overexploitation of the workforce was an essential element for understanding the process of premature wear and tear of the workforce, revealing a tendency towards premature exhaustion of these workers over the years.

El estudio, basado en un enfoque cualitativo, se desarrolló en los años 2017 y 2018 en los municipios de Toritama y Santa Cruz do Capibaribe. Se realizaron 14 entrevistas semiestructuradas que siguieron un guión preestablecido organizado en tres ejes prioritarios: perfil del trabajador; aspectos sociales y laborales; y aspectos relacionados con la salud. Al analizar los datos, se consideró el total e historicidad de las relaciones sociales y su articulación con procesos sociales particulares (método dialéctico). Las categorías orientadoras esenciales para comprender la estructura y la dinámica del proceso salud-enfermedad de los trabajadores de grupos fueron: sobreexplotación de la fuerza laboral, horas de trabajo, proceso de trabajo y producción. Los conceptos de: precariedad, intensificación, cargas de trabajo, desgaste de la fuerza laboral también fueron importantes mediadores teóricos del análisis. La sobreexplotación de la fuerza laboral fue un elemento esencial para comprender el proceso de desgaste prematuro de la fuerza laboral, revelando una tendencia al agotamiento prematuro de estos trabajadores a lo largo de los años.Objetivou-se analisar a relação entre a superexploração da força de trabalho com o conceito de desgaste em trabalhadores de facções instaladas em dois municípios do Polo de Confecções do Agreste Pernambucano. O estudo, baseado em abordagem qualitativa, desenvolveu-se nos anos de 2017 e 2018 nos municípios de Toritama e Santa Cruz do Capibaribe. Foram realizadas 14 entrevistas semiestruturadas que seguiram roteiro pré-estabelecido organizado em três eixos prioritários: perfil do trabalhador; aspectos sociais e de trabalho; e aspectos relacionados à saúde. Na análise dos dados, considerou-se a totalidade e historicidade das relações sociais e sua articulação com os processos sociais particulares (método dialético). As categorias orientadoras essenciais para compreender a estrutura e a dinâmica do processo saúde-doença dos trabalhadores das facções foram: superexploração da força de trabalho, jornada de trabalho, processo de trabalho e de produção. Os conceitos de: precarização, intensificação, cargas de trabalho, desgaste da força de trabalho também foram importantes mediadores teóricos da análise.
